The main role of an advocate is to assist you in making sure your rights are respected. Advocates will listen and support you if you have a complaint or concern about health and disability services. They may also help to resolve those complaints.
Advocates are independent and although they don't decide whether there has been a breach of the code, they will help you explore your options and help you to resolve any concerns.
Complaints that cannot be resolved are referred to the Health and Disability Commissioner. You can find a list of free advocates on the Human Rights Commission's website.
